Whilst Melbourne is famed for it's food offering, Adelaide is somewhere I never thought to go and get good tucker (Aussie slang, sorry!). How wrong was I! We spent four days here in December and while the food scene is definitely not as big as Melbourne however you can see they are building towards it. There are a number of brunch places that have cropped up over the past year that would rival some of the great cafes in Melbs. Below are a handful of eateries that we visited and I can highly recommend. Go Adelaide!
UR Caffe (117 Melbourne St, North Adelaide South Australia)
Our first brunch of the short trip was to UR Caffe, funnily enough on Melbourne Street. The decor inside was really cool with fun drawings of the owners and different foods on the walls and fridges. UR Caffe is owned by a young couple from Sydney who moved to Adelaide and opened up shop in 2011 and by the looks of things are still going strong. The menu is a collection of some classic brunch choices from corn fritters to waffles to the big brekky. I got the omelette which was light and airy and the addition of the tomato relish was spot on. It was a highly enjoyable brunch.
Karma and Crow (249-251 Richmond Road, Adelaide, South Australia)
Opened in September of 2016, this converted warehouse is one of the trendiest brunch places around. We were greeted by an outgoing guy who took our names and told us their would be a wait time of about 20 minutes. We sat outside on a bench and watched many more people come up and add their names to the list. Always a good sign. We were give 2 seats on a bench at the window. The place was buzzing and the waiters were running around, trying to keep up with all of the comings and goings.
Our server was super attentive and had our order taken as soon as we were ready. The menu was quite different and we opted for the cornbread and tofu scrambled eggs. The food took about 20 minutes so we sipped on our lovely lattes while we waited taking in the atmosphere and the great fresh, green decor. My cornbread was so tasty and Denvers tofu scrambled eggs could have been real eggs. They had a wonderful melt in your mouth effect. We left both extremely happy and full.
East Borough Eatery (96 Glen Osmond Rd, Parkside, South Australia)
This cafe was opened at the end of March this year and has a real clean, modern feel to it. The owner was so lovely, thanking us so much for visiting and supporting him. I loved the bright space inside which had a great view of the big open kitchen. The servers were all friendly and welcoming.
The presentation of the dishes was just gorgeous. There is a real focus on colour and leafy greens. I wish I had of taken a photo of the pancakes at the next table, they were a sight to behold! There were unique elements to the menu such as beetroot latte which was UNBELIEVABLE and turmeric toast - YUM! This was a really enjoyable brunch experience and I will definitely go back when next in Adelaide.
Mandoo Korean Dumpling (3/26 Bank St, Adelaide, South Australia)
I was really in the mood for dumplings one of the nights so I did the usual Google search and came across Mandoo in Adelaide CBD that got a high rating of 4.7/5 and lots of positive reviews - SOLD. The restaurant itself is quite small therefore contributing to the queue we had to join when we got there. We had a wait time of about half an hour of which we were prepared for having read about this beforehand. We got seated and were given the not too extensive menu. We ordered steamed vegetable dumplings, fried chicken dumplings and the vegetarian Bibimbap.
While waiting, you got to enjoy the view of Ra the owner, filling dumplings. The food came out quite quickly. We were blown away with all of the flavours. Usually fried dumplings can be quite greasy, however these fried chicken dumplings were not at all. I loved this restaurant that much, I honestly would have eaten here every night if our rule of 'Don't go back to the same place twice' didn't exist.
