I have had the amazing opportunity of living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for a few months of this year. You read on every blog and various traveller's itinerary about the top things to do in KL, it is the same story - Petronas Towers, KL Tower, Batu Caves etc. This is understandable as they are worth it and many people choose to do a maximum of 48 hours in KL, fitting in these suggested sites and then moving on as KL does not hold the same excitement as places such as Bangkok, Thailand or Hanoi, Vietnam.
Myself and my partner have been lucky enough to have a lot of time to explore new areas on the outskirts of KL and there is so much more to experience then the main highlights mentioned above. We are living in Subang Jaya about 30 minutes drive from KLCC (when the traffic is ok, which is never!) and it seems to be the at the center of a lot of great areas.
One area specifically is Shah Alam, which is a 15 minute drive from our apartment. There is an array of super local restaurants and shopping malls, however, the beautiful gem that we came across is this stunning piece of architecture - The Blue Mosque or as the Malays know it - Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz. We first discovered this mosque whilst driving through Shah Alam during the day time and it was pretty impressive as you can see it from quite far in the distance depending on what direction you are coming from. The real breathtaking sight is when the mosque is lit up at dusk going into dark. It is like something out of a Disney movie and I would highly recommend anyone staying in KL to make the journey out to it.
If you are planning a trip there, remember to wear the appropriate clothing. They do provide you with covering if you forget to do this. It is approximately a 45 minute drive from KL (traffic depending). You can easily book a GRAB car which will cost you around 25RM ($6USD).
