We have been lucky enough while living in KL to be invited to two Chinese weddings. Both were very different yet similar in many ways. The first was a pure business affair for us. We did not know either the bride nor groom however the grooms father works with my partner and so that is why we were invited to the dinner celebration in the evening which was 900 people seated in the ballroom of The Pullman Hotel in Bangsar.
The second was a lot more special for us as it was the wedding of our friends Jessica and Timmy. The morning of a typical Chinese wedding is for close family and friends who take part in the vows and a traditional tea ceremony. The evening is for all extended family and friends plus in some cases business associates. We were invited to the evening celebration which is usually a 6-10 course Chinese meal.
Their wedding dinner was held in Hee Lai Ton Restaurant in Pudu, KL. When we pulled up there was a Chinese dragon dance happening outside as a way of greeting all the guests. We also passed the bride and grooms car, easily spotted by the decoration of two teddies in the form of a bride and groom.

Apparently with Chinese weddings,a two dress change is usually seen at a normal wedding, however when there is three dress changes you know there is a lot of wealth within the bride and grooms family. It is their way of showcasing the wealth. Jessica had two dress changes from a huge white gown to a huge red one. Both were high necked and absolutely stunning on her.

In between the 8 courses we had there were various traditions upheld from cutting of the cake to the Chinese traditional wedding cheers Yam Sing. The bride and groom along with their respective families walk around to each table with their drinks and perform Yam Sing. This always sparks some healthy competition between each table as whoever is the loudest and holds their Yam the longest is deemed the best guests!
I am so used to Irish weddings that it is nice to experience a different cultures take on the day. The only thing that I believe Chinese weddings are lacking is the dancing at the end of the night, it seems to be eat and leave. It was a lovely evening and we left completely full which is the sign of a good Chinese meal!
